Looe Guide

Looe's cottages with hot tubs offer the perfect Cornish getaway. The town splits into East and West Looe, connected by a seven-arched bridge built in 1853. This fishing port sits where the East Looe River meets the sea, creating a picturesque harbour setting for your holiday.

Looe Island Nature Reserve and Looe Beach (4.5/5 on TripAdvisor) are must-visits, along with the Monkey Sanctuary (4/5) just 4 miles away. The town featured in the 2019 film 'Bait', which won a BAFTA for outstanding British debut.

Cottages here range from fishermen's homes with exposed beams to modern seafront apartments. Many offer private hot tubs where you can unwind after exploring the South West Coast Path that runs through town.

For groups, several large properties accommodate 8+ guests, while couples can find cosy boltholes with sea views. Most cottages are within walking distance of Looe's restaurants and shops, making car-free holidays possible.

Sightseeing

Looe packs a lot into a small area. The town's narrow streets are filled with independent shops selling everything from fudge to fishing tackle. East Looe Beach (PL13 1DL) is a sheltered, family-friendly spot with golden sand that's perfect for paddling. It scores 4.5/5 on TripAdvisor with visitors praising its cleanliness.

The Looe Island Nature Reserve is worth the boat trip (£12 adults, £6 children, boats run April-September, weather permitting). The island is home to grey seals and numerous seabirds. Boats depart from the harbour at East Looe.

For rainy days, Looe Museum (PL13 1AR) houses fascinating exhibits on the town's maritime history. It's small but informative, open 10:30am-4:30pm Monday-Saturday, £3 entry. The Old Guildhall Museum scores 4/5 on TripAdvisor.

Don't miss the Wild Futures Monkey Sanctuary (PL13 1NZ) in nearby Murrayton. It's home to rescued monkeys and gets 4/5 on TripAdvisor. Open 11am-4:30pm daily between Easter and October, tickets are £12 for adults and £8 for children.

Pet Friendly

I've found Looe works well for dog holidays. While East Looe Beach bans dogs from Easter to October, Hannafore Beach (West Looe) allows dogs year-round. It's rocky rather than sandy but great for walks with stunning views across to Looe Island.

The Jolly Sailor pub (PL13 2JE) welcomes dogs inside and out, serving good pub grub and local ales. They even offer water bowls and treats. The South West Coast Path runs right through Looe, providing miles of scenic walking for you and your four-legged companion.

Many local shops are dog-friendly too. Pengelly's fishmongers will happily sell you fresh fish scraps for your dog - a proper Cornish treat! If you need emergency vet care, Looe Veterinary Surgery (PL13 1HN) is open weekdays 8:30am-6:30pm with emergency cover available.

Remember to bring towels for drying off after beach walks - especially if your cottage has a hot tub. Nobody wants sandy paw prints in there!

Top 3 attractions you have to see in Looe

The Looe Valley Line railway journey tops my list. This scenic branch line runs from Looe to Liskeard, following the East Looe River through wooded valleys. The journey takes just 30 minutes but crosses stunning viaducts and offers wildlife spotting opportunities. Trains run roughly every two hours (less frequent on Sundays). One passenger called it "the most beautiful train journey in Britain" on TripAdvisor.

Polperro village lies just 4 miles west of Looe. This picture-perfect fishing village has banned cars from its centre, making it wonderfully peaceful to explore. The harbour is surrounded by whitewashed cottages and the Polperro Heritage Museum (PL13 2QR, £2.50 entry) tells the fascinating story of the village's smuggling past. Open daily 10am-5pm March-October.

Talland Bay sits halfway between Looe and Polperro. This small cove offers excellent rock pooling at low tide and the Talland Bay Beach Café serves fantastic crab sandwiches. The coastal path here provides spectacular views and the bay is quieter than Looe's main beaches. The car park (PL13 2JA) costs £2 for 2 hours. One TripAdvisor reviewer noted: "Worth every penny for the views alone."

Is Looe suitable for children?

Yes! The safe, sandy beach, crabbing opportunities off the harbour wall and family attractions like the Monkey Sanctuary make Looe ideal for kids. Many cottages with hot tubs are family-friendly with enclosed gardens.

When is the best time to visit Looe?

May, June and September offer warm weather without the summer crowds. The Looe Music Festival happens in September, bringing the town alive with performances. Winter visits mean empty beaches and cosy pubs with roaring fires.

Can I get around Looe without a car?

Yes. Looe has a train station with connections to Liskeard (for mainline services). Buses run to Plymouth, Polperro and other local destinations. Most attractions are walkable from central cottages.

Where's the best place to eat in Looe?

The Old Sail Loft (PL13 1AR) serves excellent seafood in a 15th-century building with harbour views. For casual dining, Sarah's Pasty Shop (PL13 1AA) makes award-winning traditional Cornish pasties.

Is Looe prone to flooding?

Parts of Looe, particularly around the harbour, can flood during high tides combined with bad weather. Cottages on higher ground or in West Looe are less affected. Check with your cottage provider if concerned.

Can I go fishing in Looe?

Absolutely! Looe has a long fishing tradition. Several boats offer fishing trips from the harbour (£25-£35 per person). You can also fish from the banjo pier or book a private charter for deep-sea fishing.
